September 12, 2024

NO MORE LATE FEES

Podcast
No More Late Fees is a movie podcast hosted by Jackie Conley and Danielle Clarke. The hosts have been friends for over two decades and used to work at Blockbuster Video together. They created their nostalgic podcast in April 2021, focusing on the late 90s and early 2000s to reminisce on their Blockbuster heydays and bring their listeners joy and laughter. In each episode, they provide a rating that their Y2K selves would have given the featured movie and then compare it to the ratings their current selves would give. The podcast has resonated so much with its audience that they were notably selected as 2021 Discover Pods Awards finalists.

Tell us a bit about you

No More Late Fees is a movie podcast hosted by Jackie Conley and Danielle Clarke. We met when we were 15 and have been friends for over two decades. Plus, we used to work at Blockbuster Video together. We created our nostalgic podcast in April 2021, focusing on the late 90s and early 2000s to reminisce on our Blockbuster heydays and bringing our listeners joy and laughter. In each episode, we provide a rating that our Y2K selves would have given the featured movie and then compare it to the ratings our current selves would give.

Tell us about your podcast and where we can listen

Two ex-Blockbuster employees and BFFs reliving the late 90’s and early 2000’s by rewatching the best and worst movies from 1995-2005. Fueled by friendship and nostalgia, we relive our Blockbuster heydays and bring listeners a hefty dose of laughter along the way.

How did the podcast come to be?

In 2021 we were still in the pandemic and wanted to rewind to a simpler time and bond over mutual love of movies. It started with a phone call while Jackie was on a road trip and ended with a fun nostalgic ride.

What is each of your favorite movies?

Clueless, Crooklyn, Lilo and Stitch, 10 Things I Hate About You, Fever Pitch, The Princess Diaries, Scream,

So you both worked at Blockbuster – tell us all about it!

We had a blast working at Blockbuster. Jackie was a manager and Danielle was a very sassy employee that was great at selling Rewards programs lol. It was great getting 5 free movies every week and talking about movies all the time.

What do you miss most about Blockbuster?

Just being able to go to a Blockbuster on the weekends was a moment. It made watching a movie a whole experience.

Have you been to the last Blockbuster?

We haven’t yet but it’s definitely on our bucket list. The Last Blockbuster documentary actually was one of the catalysts for starting the podcast. We both had such an emotional reaction to watching it that we wanted to reminisce about those days and movies. It became full circle when we got the chance to interview the director Taylor Morden on our show.

Do you still own anything from when you worked there?

Danielle: Lol yeah. Jackie has a few things. Her name tag, shirts, and we both have movies

What does a perfect Saturday night movie look like in the late 90’s?

For us it was boardgame, a trip to Blockbuster or the movie theater, snacks especially slurpees and of course sleepovers

Name a movie that you just can’t seem to like even though everyone loves it?

For both of us collectively is Titanic. Don’t hate us but we stubbed 10 toes on that hard opinion lol

Name 5 movies that would help describe the podcast best

1. Empire Records

2. Scream

3. Independence Day

4. 200 Cigarettes

5. Drumline

What 6 songs would be on the NO MORE LATE FEES soundtrack?

1. Tricky – Run DMC (Can’t Hardly Wait)
2. Anytime – Eve 6 (Out Cold)
3. You’ll be in my heart- Phill Collins (Tarzan)
4. Kiss Me- Sixpence none the Richer (She’s All That)
5. Exhale (shoop, shoop)- Whitney Houston (Waiting to Exhale)
6. Keep on Lovin’ You- REO Speedwagon (Drive Me Crazy)

DVDS OR VHS tapes?

DVDs

Anything cool in the works that we can know about?

We are super excited for an extended magical/spooky season this year kicking off in September.

What types of episodes does your audience like most?

Definitely romcoms and comedies are in our top 10 most listened to episodes

If you had your own movie theatre for your podcast what would it look like?

It would definitely be an explosion of pink and would have the best popcorn you’ve ever tasted. Jackie’s mom taught us young how to make delicious popcorn. We would also have the theaters split for talkers vs. Non talkers. Some of us can be real chatty during a movie.

Are we grabbing pizza rolls or bagel bites for the movie?

Oh that’s hard. It would most likely be half and half. Although pizza rolls can really burn your mouth if you’re not careful.

Salty or sweet snacks for the movie?

Both. Danielle likes to pour reeces pieces into her popcorn

Favorite movie quote?

“Up your ziggy with a wa-wa brush” is a line from the 1998 movie Strike! (also known as All I Wanna Do)

A phrase you would leave for a nostalchick

Be kind and rewind!
