If you were a kid in the 90s, you already know — birthday parties back then were something special. They weren’t over-the-top or Instagram-perfect, but they were full of character (literally) and chaos in the best way.

Themed parties were the gold standard. You picked your favorite character — Barney, Ninja Turtles, Rugrats, you name it — and everything followed suit. The hats, the plates, the goody bags, even the cake… all repping your chosen icon. Those little cone party hats with the string that snapped you in the face? Mandatory.
I personally loved Barney themed birthdays!

the party spots? Elite. Chuck E. Cheese’s was a childhood dream — arcade games, sky tubes, mediocre pizza, and the ticket blaster (if you got in that thing, you were royalty). McDonald’s PlayPlace parties hit too — crawling through plastic tunnels before diving into a Happy Meal and singing with a party host in a visor.

Some parties were held at skating rinks (cool kid energy), while others happened in backyards with Slip ‘N Slides and hot dogs on the grill. Either way, the vibe was always loud, fun, and sticky from cake and Capri Suns.

Speaking of cake — that sheet cake from the grocery store with thick frosting and your name in big wonky letters? Iconic. Bonus points if the character on it was slightly smudged or terrifying.

You’d leave the party with a balloon, a goody bag full of candy and plastic toys, and a smile that lasted all weekend. No hashtags, no filters — just pure 90s joy.
