WE DON’T WANNA GROW UP PODCAST

Podcast

Stacy & Pete are 80s kids/90s teens with a podcast created to share warm & cozy feelings of nostalgia!

Pete and Stacy are the hosts of nostalgic podcast, We Don’t Wanna Grow Up. They discuss movies, tv shows, music, toys, trends and all things pop culture from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

Where to find We Don’t Wanna Grow Up Pod:

Tell us a little bit about you guys!

Hi! We’re Stacy and Pete! We met each other in 1998, but didn’t reconnect until 2013. We got married in 2018 and happily reside in Tennessee with our kitties.

Tell us a little bit about the pod

We Don’t Wanna Grow Up is about all things pop culture from the 80s, 90s, and early 00s. The name is a take on the Toys ‘R’ Us theme song. While we are very much adults, we fully embrace the inner child inside.

How did the podcast happen? What was the inspiration?

We started the We Don’t Wanna Grow Up podcast in 2020, during very uncertain times, when we discovered that watching cartoons, tv shows & movies from our childhood and teen years was very comforting. We thought it could maybe help others, to remind them of those warm & cozy memories.

How long have you had the podcast?

We’ve been going for three-and-a-half years! Our first episode was in October 2020.

What have been some of the coolest/biggest moments for you with this journey?

The community we’ve built with our listeners and followers on social media has been the most pleasantly surprising thing. We have a Facebook group called The Cozy Club – Fans of We Don’t Wanna Grow Up, where we have gotten to know some amazing nostalgia-loving people! It’s been very exciting to have different celebrities follow and engage with us, too. It’s also been really rewarding to see our podcast numbers grow! We were #3 in Film Reviews on Apple Podcasts not long ago, surrounded by other podcasts that we love, so it just feels surreal!

I feel like you both do an insanely great job creating community. You share some of the BEST photos and you truly make me feel like I want to be apart of all you share! How do you feel like you make that magic happen?

The photo submissions are definitely one of my favorite things about running our social media accounts. It started organically, when a few people just started sharing their photos with us, back when we only had about 200 followers. I loved them so much, I would share them to our page, and that encouraged more people to share their photos! I get so many now, it’s hard to keep up with, but I never want it to stop! I do think (or hope) that people can tell that I put my heart & soul into our pages (as we both do with the podcast). I take a lot of time curating posts and sharing everyone’s stories, and I love seeing the way people connect in the comments section!

What are some of your favorite topics to share?

Personally, I really love getting pictures of people’s childhood and teenage bedrooms. I love how so many of us personalized our space… yet they were all so similar! I also love prom season and the holidays. I have a lot of magazines that I had as a teen, and people really seem to enjoy those, along with catalogs that I share. I spend a lot of time editing and trying to find the perfect song to fit the feeling of the magazine as I’m flipping through it.

I listen often so I know recently you guys mentioned that music/music lists you choose are really popular. Why do you think people gravitate to those so much?

First of all, thank you for listening! I think people really do just love a list. Seeing what we’ll choose and seeing if they agree or not! We’ve just started sharing some lists that were actually voted on by our community, so that was cool to see what the overall consensus was, rather than just what we like. Plus, I think our longtime listeners may get tired of hearing us talk about our particular favorites over and over, so it’s nice to change it up!

Have you guys had any celebs on the pod? Or anyone you would love to?

We have not been an interview podcast, as of yet, because one of us (Stacy) is a big chicken! We have been approached by a lot of people, and we’ve always known one day there would be someone that we couldn’t say no to. That moment recently happened, but we’re still in talks, so I don’t want to say who it is in case it falls through! But fingers crossed!

Can you tell me what your favorite childhood toys were growing up?

Stacy – Barbies, My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch Kids, Rainbow Brite!

Pete – Ewok Village, Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter, M.A.S.K. Volcano, G.I. Joe Night Raven

Do you still collect nostalgia? If so what?

We do! We actually started re-collecting the childhood toys we no longer have shortly before starting the podcast! We typically buy each other things on our wishlist for holidays/birthdays now, too! So much, but the big wish list items have been:

Stacy – Barbie Dream House/Dream Pool/McDonalds Playset, My Little Pony Dream Castle, Care Bears Care-a-lot Playset, Jem and Rio from Jem and the Holograms. For

Pete – the Ewok Village, B-Wing Starfighter, M.A.S.K. Volcano!

Favorite 80’s or 90’s movie?

Stacy – 80s: Teen Witch, Can’t Buy Me Love, Grease 2, Annie. 90s: Empire Records, Romeo & Juliet, Only You.

Pete – 80s: RoboCop 90s: Fight Club.

Stacy I heard you were a big NKOTB fan … did you get to see them in concert growing up?

Yes! My sister is almost 9 years older than me, so she was a teenager when they were popular (the first time around), and took me to see them twice (Magic Summer Tour and No More Games Tour). As an adult I’ve seen them several times, and met them a few times, too!

You guys mentioned recently about rolling out some possible new things on the podcast – any sneaks you can tell us or get us excited for?

We’re starting a new series where our listeners get to pick an episode of tv (tv show, cartoon, game show, talk show) for us to watch and then they will send us questions to answer about it, that we won’t read until we’re recording. We thought it would be a fun way to get others involved, and add a new format! TV shows are hard to cover bc there are so many episodes, so it’s a fun way to get to touch on some, without having to watch the whole series. We’d like to, but there’s just not enough time for that! We’re also going to be doing a new series on our Patreon called Blind Date, where we watch a movie that either one or both of us hasn’t seen. We’ve had several requests from people to hear our thoughts on things we’ve never seen, so we thought that could be fun!

Pick 2 tv show characters you could say would best describe you both

Pete – Zack Morris & Jordan Catalano combined.

Stacy: Felicity Porter (I was a freshman in college the same year she was, so her character really resonated with me, in many ways).

A store that no longer exists you miss the most

Stacy – Gadzooks, dELiA*S (it exsists, but still), any music stores.

Pete – Toys ‘R Us (I know it’s back, but it’s not the same)

A phrase you would leave for a nostalchick

Pete –  “Be excellent to each other.” – Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Stacy –  “Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.” – Practical Magic
